U of A Study Raises the Bar for Youth Prevention
A new University of Alberta study should raise the bar for prevention. The response should be evidence-based, youth-focused, and measurable.
The current Alberta news hook
Medical Xpress reported on University of Alberta research finding early cardiopulmonary impairment and pulmonary vascular dysfunction in young e-cigarette users. The study compared 20 young e-cigarette users with a control group of 20 young people of similar age, height, and sex.
The reporting says the e-cigarette users had been vaping for an average of 3.4 years and had never smoked traditional tobacco cigarettes or marijuana.
Prevention needs more than outrage
The study should not become just another talking point. It should push Alberta toward better prevention, better school supports, better cessation help for youth, and better monitoring of youth access sources.
- Publish youth access data by source type.
- Fund evidence-based school and community prevention.
- Support youth who are already dependent on nicotine.
- Measure whether any new restriction actually reduces youth use.
The goal is not to win a slogan fight. The goal is fewer young people starting nicotine and better help for those already using it.
